In the words of his latest single, independent hip-hop artist Hoodie Allen has “shown us what he’s made of” on his “Hanging With Hoodie” tour by delivering in both intimacey and variety as part of his heartfelt performances at venues across the country.
Allen’s show at the Roxy Theater in Los Angeles on May 30 was overflowing with personality. Allen gave a well-executed performance that was complemented by a welcoming atmosphere. Hoodie provided energy by interacting with his guitarist, bassist, drummer and DJ in addition to becoming involved with the crowd.
Under the stage name Hoodie Allen, Steven Markowitz gained popularity with his independently produced mixtapes and Extended Plays acclaimed for their witty lyrics, shrewd cultural references and relatable topics, such as the struggles of relationships, all supported by catchy beats and varied instrumental additions. His 2012 EP, “All American,” peaked at number 10 on the U.S. charts, and his acoustic version of the EP, “Americoustic,” reached 29.
Over the past few years, Hoodie has created a stronger stage presence, performing in cities throughout the United States and Europe. In spring of 2014, the alternative rapper announced his “Hanging With Hoodie” tour, traveling throughout the United States in smaller venues, emphasizing affordable ticket prices and complimentary meet-and-greets. Fans lined up outside the Roxy to wait their turn for a chance at a photo, an autograph and a quick conversation with the artist.
After the meet-and-greet, Canadian rap-rock group Down With Webster opened the show for Allen. The band had plenty of energy and finesse, engaging the crowd with dance moves and catchy songs, proving a perfect lead in for Hoodie Allen.
Allen kicked off his show with an admirable performance of “Small Town,” a track off of his “All American” EP. He continued performing with passion and skill, and even decided to take requests from the audience to play his fans’ personal favorites.
To provide diversity to his set, Allen’s performances deviated just enough from recorded versions of songs to make the show genuinely raw and unique.
Between songs, Allen shared short and sweet anecdotes, dedicated songs to fans and telling of experiences in his life. This personal touch made for a more intimate performance.
The set list provided a balance between more upbeat songs like “Eighteen Cool” and slower tracks such as “Two Lips.” The changes in pace added emotional variety and helped to keep fans engaged through the two-hour concert.
Allen and his band’s interactions with the crowd kept the Roxy lively. After fans sang along to Allen’s performance of “Cake Boy,” the band brought cakes onstage and tossed them into the crowd to create a humorous finale to the track. When Hoodie was chanted back on stage for an encore performance of his internet hit, “No Interruption,” electronic dance music served as background noise while Hoodie and his team sprayed water from punctured bottles into the crowd, ending the concert on an intriguing note.
Hoodie Allen’s Los Angeles segment of the “Hanging With Hoodie” tour was a well-delivered and whole-hearted performance that made for an entertaining night. His energetic movements and friendly interactions with the crowd created a personal atmosphere. Combined with the quality of the performance, these unique elements came together for the ultimate concert experience.
The tour’s final show took place in New York at the Bowery Ballroom on June 8.
