Costa Boys lacrosse is heading in the right direction under new head coach, Aaron Karsh as he prepares for next season through a summer program.
The main objective of the program is to condition athletes and improve stick skills. The team will practice once a week, while also participating in three summer tournaments on the West Coast.
“The team must understand that lacrosse is physical,” Karsh said. “Conditioning will play an integral role.”
According to sophomore Zane Crandall, the lacrosse team wants to improve chemistry on and off the field. However, many players will not be playing for the summer team because of summer club teams.
“It will help team chemistry for those participating, but a large amount of players are not playing for it,” sophomore Reid Bryan said.
The summer team will not be mandatory because there are many players that play for various club teams over the summer. Karsh, however, believes the summer team will still be a valuable resource for the players choosing to participate.
“I think [the summer lacrosse team] is very important,” Karsh said. “It gives the players a chance to grow, and there is less pressure if someone makes a mistake.”
The lacrosse season starts mid-March. According to Karsh, the team needs to maintain form and focus for next season, despite it being so far away.
“Any time you get to go on the field is a chance to get better, even though there is a short amount of time to practice in the summer,” Karsh said.
Costa lacrosse lost in the first round of the California Interscholastic Federation this year and hopes that next year will be able to improve upon their 8-7 record.
“In addition to the fact that many of us will be training separately, the playing time together is great,” sophomore Nash Hale said. “We made it to CIF last year without any summer training, so I think this year’s extra training will be a huge help.”
According to Crandall, the summer program will provide more opportunities for playing time for underclassmen and will be a major advantage for the players on the team who do not play on any club teams because they will be able to stay at a consistent level of play and improve.
“There are many players who are not a part of club lacrosse, and I think this is a great opportunity for them to play together all summer,” junior Logan Buckstaff said.
