The weight of the team on your shoulders. This is the only thing CIF goalie Dana Tuttle feels under the bright lights of the Mira Costa aquatic center. With the 2010 season underway, Tuttle and the rest of the team are looking to improve upon their second place finish last year in CIF.
Tuttle contributes greatly to the Mira Costa boy’s varsity water polo defense. Tuttle’s personal goals have gone along with the team’s. Hours of training have been put in by the entire team to reach the championship they fell short of last season. Riding off of last year’s highs, the team looks to build upon their success.
“The team’s first goal is to win Bay League. Our ultimate goal is to win CIF, but we’re not getting ahead of ourselves. We’re going one game at a time,” Tuttle said.
Putting the team before the individual Tuttle has devoted himself to developing the sense of brotherhood and unity of this year’s team. Because the team has sophomores through seniors, Tuttle and the team believe it is important for the team to come together and play as a unit. As the co captain it is important to bring these goals in fruition.
“I really want to win CIF this year; I want to get that ring. The team’s goals are my goals. Also to play as a team with everyone being selfless,” Dana Tuttle said.
Trying to make the teams hopes become reality the water polo team has been in long preparation for the season ahead. Most play the sport year round through competitive club teams. Tuttle and other seniors have also started to think about their careers after graduation. However, intense in-season workouts have kept them busy.
“The team has been practicing before school every day from 5:30 to 6:45 in addition to 2:00 to 4:00 every day after school,” sophomore Sam Siltanen said.
Along with his focus on the season in progress, Tuttle has began to look into his own future in the sport. Mira Costa and the southern California water polo circuit have helped him get noticed by numerous colleges and universities in the state.
“I would love to play collegiately; I have looked at the University of California Santa Barbra, Loyola Marymount, and UC Irvine. I’ve been in contact with the coaches there and like all of them. There’s plenty of time to talk about scholarships later on,” Tuttle said.
Of course no one man can drive Costa’s team to victory alone. There is a great sense of comradery and selflessness among this year’s team. Tuttle hopes that this can be the driving force behind a successful season. Team play is expected to be the team’s strong point with the mission of taking this year’s CIF crown.
“There are countless key contributors to the team this year, my co captain Jake Miller is sure to have a great year. Trevor Tarte and lefty Joe Siltanen will score goals as well. People look up to Julian Monk because he inspires the team with endless enthusiasm. Ryan Koverman along with Justin Pratt, Josh Hudinger, and Charlie Manclark will help make our season a success.” Tuttle said.
