Like the common cold, Mira Costa’s school spirit is infectious and has spread to the Manhattan Beach Middle School students.
Costa’s Associated Student Body worked with MBMS stagg to set up a pep rally at MBMS during lunch on Sep. 12. Costa’s ASB, marching band, cheer team and football team participated.
“The pep rally will get other students ready for their high school experience by giving them a little taste of different teams and sports they can join,” junior ASB member Kiera Isgrig said.
Costa cheerleaders used their school spirit in their cheers by encouraging everyone to chant along with them. They did a variety of cheers that got the students off their feet and surrounding the stage.
“We have a number of cheers and routines ready to perform at any given event, so come time for the rally, it will be a surprise for the students which one we perform,” Varsity Cheerleader Nicole Sumen said. “The MBMS cheer program is very similar to Costa’s and I hope performing for them inspires future cheerleaders to join the team.”
Costa football players came out and talked about what positions they played and encouraged the students to come out and support them in their upcoming games.
“Our school has been lacking school spirit and I hope this inspires future Mira Costa High School students to do more things like this to spread mustang pride,” Costa head football coach Don Morrow said.
The Marching band played “Green and Gold”, “Eye of The Tiger”, and “Dance to the Music”. The performance gave students at the middle school a chance to see if they would want to join band when they come to Costa.
“I think MBMS loved the performance because they were really enthusiastic and cheered for us,” sophomore Annabelle Mirhashemi said. “It was great to show the middle school students what band is about and what we do in general.”
Many students enjoyed the band performance so much, they filmed it with iPads while waving their hands around with friends. All the MBMS students remained amongst the stage throughout the rest of the pep rally.
“The marching band was my favorite since the music was loud and got my attention,” MBMS student Arya Samimi said. “I hope that Costa comes back to do more performances because my friends and I really enjoyed it.”
