Level 10 Fitness Takes Legal Action Against Assault

A legal dispute involving Level 10 Fitness, training grounds for Mira Costa’s Surf Team, Olympics athletes, and residents of Manhattan Beach, has brought unrest and discomfort t o clients and faculty.

Since 2011, neighbors of Level 10 Fitness, Cory Mendelsohn and Jared Mitchell, have used physical violence, insults, video footage to embarrass and taunt members.

“Both Mitchell and Mendelsohn have unfailingly attempted to ruin the community,” Level 10 Fitness Owner Meredith Miller said. “They have tried again and again to harass my clientele, even after we politely asked them to stop.”

Both Mendelsohn and Mitchell have taken issue with the amount of “noise pollution” emitted from the gym via weights being dropped and the music played throughout the building. The back wall of the facility was soundproofed due to previous complaints. While Miller believes that the music is within a moderate volume, Mendelsohn and Mitchell have resulted to violence and lawsuits.

“My problem is where the gym is located; I can’t work or sleep well because of all of the noise constantly coming from the gym,” Mendelsohn said. “Meredith deserved her eviction.”

While the Manhattan Beach Police Department has been involved on several occasions, Level 10 decided to take action in 2012, filing a restraining order against Mendelsohn and Mitchell. Both of the neighbors have repeatedly violated the restraining order, resulting in a large amount of unrest and worry for the members of Level 10.

“For the first time in my life, I haven’t felt safe in the city of Manhattan Beach,” an anonymous client, who has been a member of the gym for 3 years said. “Meredith and her staff have brought families, athletic teams, and individual people together for almost 6 years, and it wouldn’t be just to allow her and her assets to be so promptly and rudely taken away from her.”

The repeated attempts of intimidation have scared off customers from the gym, resulting in a loss of profit, membership, and loss of the permit to own the facility itself. Mendelsohn and Mitchell have also hosed down clients who participate in early morning runs, commenting on their physical appearance and health in the process.

“She has such a positive influence on our community and I’m so glad people have been given to the opportunity to train and exercise at her gym,” another anonymous client said. “I want people in the future to have that chance that I do right now, and we need to do everything in our power to get the gym back.”
