Measure BB construction enters last stages

Measure BB construction at Mira Costa began its last phase on June 30 after completing Phase III over the 2014 summer.

Bernards Brothers Incorporation, the company handling the construction, completed both the drama and choir rooms on July 23. The choir room is now located in the old band room, but drama still remains in its original location in the band hall.

“Two of my three major goals for the summer were to have the drama and choir room open,” Costa Principal Dr. Ben Dale said. “Phase III of the construction successfully stayed on track.”

Last year, the middle of Costa’s campus was blocked off due to the construction of the new quad. According to Dale, during one of the construction meetings in August, Bernards Brothers Incorporation found a way to open the gates during passing periods. This new walk-way is now accessible to all students during passing periods, reducing the amount of student traffic on the east side of campus.

“I did not think the opening of the gate would happen,” Dale said. “It is more work for the construction crew to open and shut the gate everyday, so I was grateful to Bernards construction for being able to find a way to do it.”

The new quad, which will be completed between January and March of 2015, will include an amphitheater and a grassy lounging area for students.

“I think the new quad will give the students a central gathering place and a greater sense of unity,” Dale said.

According to Superintendent Dr. Michael Matthews, the new band and orchestra rooms are the last to be completed. These buildings will be worked on throughout the beginning of the 2014-15 school year and are scheduled to be completed between January and March of 2015.

“The construction has stayed perfectly on track throughout the summer and has had no delays thus far,” Matthews said.”
