Last year, the Mira Costa swim team practiced Monday through Thursday after school in the pool. Now, due to pool availability, the swim team practices during zero period at seven am.
Morning practices result in more pool space and more time to prepare for the season.
“Water polo took up most of the pool in the afternoon and we only had two lanes to fit the whole team,” Coach Murphy said. “With the change, everyone can be in the pool at once. People get more practice time which is valuable.”
Some members of the team are enjoying the change for various reasons.
“I like zero period swim,” sophomore Danielle Gonzales said. “It wakes you up, and you get your workout for the day over with. It doesn’t affect my classes much. I just have to go to bed earlier and finish my homework at night.”
Others have had varied responses to the new practice time.
“I would prefer to have swim practice sixth period,” Sophomore Frances Caflisch said “I would not be wet the rest of the day, and the girls would not be rushed to shower and get ready before first period.”
In the spring during swim season, the class will be changed to sixth period for swim meets. This is causing a problem for swimmers that take seven classes.
“I take seven classes, so I will have to switch my zero and sixth period once swim season starts.” Sophomore Emma Nerad said.
One of the main issues for the girls is having limited time to get ready before their first class.
“Swim practice sixth period is better because it is hard getting up early and getting in the pool,” Sophomore Natalie Young said “The worst part is being tired in all of my classes for the rest of the day.”
Despite the mixed feelings, the swim team will most likely benefit from more practice time and be ready for swim season to start.
“A lot of people do not like the time change because it is so early, but I think the team will benefit from it,” said Sophomore Jean Paul LeBosnoyani. “With the extra pool space, everyone gets to practice as opposed to last year when we were crammed into two lanes.”
