Mira Costa band and orchestra students moved back into the band hall lockers for the 2014-15 school year, after being given temporary lockers last year which were placed on the sides of the history building.
Because of the construction, the band and orchestra classes are temporarily using the small gym and cafeteria as classrooms.
“This is not ideal since we teach large classes and need space,” Orchestra director Peter Park said. “It takes time out of our practices because we have to set up and clean up the cafeteria at the beginning and end of each period, It has been a challenge, but it will be worth it in the end with the improved band hall.”
According to Dale, the construction in phase three should be fully done in January of 2015. After Jan 2015, the band and orchestra classes can move back into their rooms and not have to play in the cafeteria and other temporary solutions.
“The goal is to serve lockers to the band kids first, then the orchestra, choir, and drama kids,” said Dr. Dale. “Everything should be completed by January, but hopefully we can start to move in over winter break.”
Band hall lockers were given to the students for their instruments and school supplies since regular locker space is needed.
“Although the new lockers are nice, sometimes you cannot stop at them because of their location,” said sophomore Kalea Frank.
Overall, students are satisfied with the new lockers but find issue with their location.
“Even though the new lockers are nice and updated they are located in an inconvenient spot behind the history buildings,” said Sophomore Kate Dixon. “Everyone I know has gotten their locker back, but the locker assignments were switched, so there have been a few problems here and there.”
