Students performed 23 acts in the annual Talent Show on Feb. 11 in the auditorium. Senior class officers President Brian Chen, Vice President Katie Thompson and Secretary/Treasurer Annie Curry hosted the event, which was emceed by Curry and senior Rico Wright.
Seniors Tyler Duncan and Joe Sanders won with first place in the Talent Show, followed by sophomore Kieran Moriah in second place and junior Marchan Hutto in third-place. First, second and third place winners received Best Buy gift cards valued at $100, $75 and $50, respectively as their prizes.
The first place act, performed by Duncan and Sanders, was a rendition of the song “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved,” by The Script, with Duncan singing and Sanders playing guitar.
“I was so shocked when I heard I won. I did the Talent Show just for fun so to win was really cool, unexpected but awesome,” Duncan said.
Second-place performer Moriah sang “Almost Lover” by A Fine Frenzy and played the piano accompaniment. Hutto won third with an original song called “Angels Sing Out.”
Junior Joshua “Chris” Martin demonstrated his unique talent of rapping through his performance of the “Mustang Rap.” This original song was a tribute to the Mira Costa varsity football team’s successful year.
“I believe greatness deserves something great. The football team had a great year, and I wanted to gift my peers with this song,” Martin said.
Several bands played at the show, including Oh Crêpe, Harmonic Dissonance and Funk 49. Student bands often play at the show to promote their songs and for the fun experience of playing to a larger audience.
“My song with [senior] Sean [McGill] in Harmonic Dissonance was definitely a crowd pleaser and I think we both knew that from the start.” junior violinist Tristan Koester said. “When I saw the wide range of acts, the diversity of the night became clear and all my uneasiness dissipated.”
The senior class officers began preparing for the talent show before the winter break. Thompson coordinated the auditions and the show with additional assistance from the Student Government during the auditions.
“Although it was a lot of work organizing the show, it was a lot of fun. All the performers were really enthusiastic about participating, which made my job a lot easier,” Thompson said.
Auditions were held on Feb. 8 and 9. Over 30 acts tried out, and ASB panelists decided which acts would be most appropriate.
“This year we had so many good acts try out this year that we had to cut good acts for the talent show,” student activities director Lisa Claypoole said.
Many students thought the talent show was very entertaining and successful.
“I thought the talent show was a phenomenal display of the abilities of Costa’s student body,” said junior Chester Hall. “ Some people have some really unique talents that I was very impressed by. Overall, it was a great show.”
Though there were some technical problems during the show, organizers considered the show to be very successful.
“Out of the six years I had been at Mira Costa, I believe this was the best talent show I have ever seen,” Claypoole said.
