Former Environmental Science and Marine Biology teacher Harold Coller has a fresh start 1000 miles away from his former home.
Coller and his family moved up to Portland, Oregon on July 19th. He and his family rented a Recreational Vehicle for four days to reach their new home. It is located in the town of West Linn, which he claims is like what Manhattan Beach is to Los Angeles.
“We are getting settled in but things here are different,” Coller said. “It is quieter and a little bit slower paced which I like.”
Coller and his family moved up to Portland to be closer to family, have a lower cost of living, and a larger home. Heather Coller, Coller’s Wife, received an offer from her employer to move for a very good financial deal.
“I like how clean and how green everything is here,” Coller said. “It is amazingly clean, even the High School where I work.”
Coller is currently teaching with another former Costa teacher, Tom Schuster, at Wilsonville High School. He is a long-term substitute in Chemistry. He is currently searching for a full time position and has been given a few offers, but he is obliged to stay and finish the long-term substitution assignment.
“The school is similar to Costa in that it is one of the best in the community, but it only has 1100 students,” Coller said. “The school is all indoors, inside one building.”
As an environmentalist, Coller is enjoying the outdoors of Portland. However, he immensely misses Costa and the staff and hopes to eventually return back to his “true” home one day.
“I miss so many things that it would take days to say it all,” Coller said. “I will carry the Green and Gold with me forever.”
