“Annabelle,” is a child’s nightmare in its entirety, with horrifying scenes throughout the film.
“Annabelle,” directed by John Leonetti, fails to provide crucial background information about the protagonists, but the film contains an energetic plot and a committed cast, which makes this a must-see film.
Shortly after Mia (Annabelle Wallis) and John Gordon’s (Ward Horton) home is invaded by a duo of satanic cultists, the couple begins to experience supernatural events involving a collector’s doll. They soon realize a demon possesses the doll, and it will not leave the couple and their newborn alone until it fulfills its purpose of taking a soul.
The downfall to this film is the lack of background information. Many answers in the movie still remain untold, even after the film’s end. Information including, why they get the doll and why the demon haunts them are unanswered.
Horton and Wallis both show devotion to their characters’ emotions and actions through their enamor for one another as a couple. Horton does a superb job as a loving husband to Wallis, making the film realistic and interesting. For example, Horton is very supportive of Wallis when having her child, taking care of her while she endures the pain of pregnancy.
The plot is well thought out, with each scene flowing seamlessly to the next. Each scene is clear, concise and easily interpreted. From cultists raiding the couple’s home, to a possessed doll tormenting their lives, the plot is full of action and easy to follow, without the confusion that usually occurs in fast-paced plots.
Another excellent aspect of the film is the atmosphere, which is dark and mysterious and ties into the plot well. The atmosphere is constant throughout the film, like when the couple is in the basement and Mia is engulfed by almost complete darkness. The atmosphere produces a dark, creepy setting that contributes to the film’s apprehension.
The film is also suspenseful, making the film both enjoyable and terrifying. Each scene builds tension and anticipation, such as when the couple’s light in their house is flickering. The suspense in the film produces an uneasy feeling, making the film more horrifying.
“Annabelle” is a must see horror film with sharp acting and a terrifying atmosphere. The film also provides an energetic plot that keeps the audience on edge, and although there are minor issues regarding the lack of information and the ending, it is a horrifying film that is worthwhile.
“Annabelle is rated R and is available in theaters nationwide.
