After three p.m., Costa senior Jake Tibbetts can be found cracking jokes among professional comedians. In order to combine stand up comedy and school, Tibbetts brought the stage to Costa with the Stand Up Comedy Club.

The club’s main purpose is to provide an outlet for students to practice and perform standup comedy. One of Tibbetts’ main goals as president is to teach members that stand up is a different form of entertainment, focusing on the speaker rather than a fictional character like traditional drama and improvisational theatre.

“I wanted to provide a place for students, along with myself, to pursue something that I love doing so much,” Tibbetts said. “I hope students who join will find the same happiness in stand up comedy that I have.”

Tibbetts’ passion for stand up comedy started six months ago when he began attending open mics in the LA County Area. To Tibbetts, stand up comedy is more than a hobby and has impacted his life at Costa, through public speaking in Model United Nations.

“I’m definitely a lot more of an extrovert and outgoing than I used to be,” Tibbetts said. “I realized that shyness was only going to hold me back in this pursuit. I try to meet everyone I can now which has allowed me to meet people from a much broader spectrum in life. I’m generally happier in my life as well now that I’ve been doing this.”

In the future, Tibbetts plans to host a stand up comedy show featuring professional guest comedians for Costa students, parents and staff.

“I would love to see the club grow and expand,” Tibbetts said. “Hopefully we will be able to host our own events by the end of the year.”

The Stand Up Comedy Club meets on Mondays at lunch in room 1 with English teacher and club advisor, Alan Zeoli. During meetings, members will learn the basics of stand up and have the opportunity to perform.

“I look forward to learning more about stand up,” junior Sam Sturges said. “My goal is to work on the craft, get comfortable performing, and even start writing my own bits by the end of the year.”
