On Sept. 16, former city council member and mayor pro tempore Wayne Powell took on the position of Manhattan Beach mayor for the second time in his five years on city council.
Powell is currently serving nine months as Manhattan Beach mayor, in accordance with the cycle of Manhattan Beach City Council members through the mayor position. Powell took over after former mayor Amy Howorth finished her term.
“Wayne is enthusiastic and committed to doing the right thing,” Mayor Pro Tempore Mark Burton said. “He takes the responsibility of being mayor seriously and is honored to serve our residesnts. I think the residents of Manhattan Beach trust him in representing our city.”
The mayor’s duties include running city council meetings, creating the agendas and acting as an active representative of Manhattan Beach at community events.
“I like controlling the tempo of the meetings,” Powell said. “It is great to be able to organize the meetings’ agendas and have good topics of discussion with people who are interested in what is going on within the community.”
In continuation from his previous term, Powell is reinstating the “I Heart MB” campaign, a program that acknowledges distinguished community members.
“At each city council meeting, ‘I Heart MB’ recognizes one individual and one private organization that has made a significant impact on the community,” Powell said. “We have some really amazing people in this city who have contributed a lot and should be recognized for their work and achievements.”
