In the most nail-biting game of the Mustangs’ season, a controversial call with 12 seconds left in the fourth quarter along with a fumble by Costa with one minute left led the Inglewood Sentinels to a 22-21 victory at Coleman Stadium on Oct. 24.
Costa scored quickly on their first drive on junior quarterback Jacob Silvera’s four-yard touchdown run, setting the pace for the first quarter. In the second half, the Sentinels rallied and took advantage of a Costa turnover, despite taking a fourth timeout with 12 seconds remaining, which should have led to a 10-second runoff. Instead, Inglewood was allowed to reset their offense, leading to a one-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Kindric Johnson and a 22-21 victory for the Sentinels.
“We fumbled the ball and that play was self inflicted,” Coach Don Morrow said. “We probably could have stopped them, but we didn’t.”
The Mustangs are now 2-6 overall and 1-2 in Bay League. Costa’s next game is against Morningside at 7 pm on Friday, October 31st at Mira Costa.
