After introducing a comprehensive waste reduction program last year, Grades of Green will continue environmental education at Costa for the 2014-15 school year by implementing “walking assemblies” as well as permanent recycle and trash bins.
Grades of Green is a program that works nationwide with schools to create different ways for students and their communities to take care of the environment. As part of the comprehensive waste reduction program implemented last year, Grades of Green held an “eco-consultation” where they determined how much waste Costa produces and how much of the waste was recyclable. The Waste Management, a nationwide waste hauling company, and Beach Cities Health District both funded this project.
“We educated students and staff about the importance of recycling,” program manager Jan Dunbar said. “A big challenge for us is ensuring that our message reaches every member of the campus community.”
The program plans to implement “walking assemblies” this year where student volunteers will teach other students how to properly sort waste during five-minute presentations in classrooms.
“We hope the ‘walking assemblies’ will inspire kids by showing them how easy it is to recycle,” Dunbar said.
