Mira Costa Model United Nations is currently at the Secondary Schools’ United Nations Symposium conference in Montréal, Canada, which started yesterday and will continue until Sunday.
Thirty-five select sophomores, juniors and seniors are currently at the Montréal conference among 1,000 other high school students from around the world.
“It is all about building our team, so ultimately we felt that the students invited to Montréal were the best fit for our group,” MUN advisor Robert Timberlake said.
In the weeks prior to the Montréal conference, students researched their topics and participated in in-class debates to prepare for the conference.
“I am really excited and honored to have a chance to compete for Costa MUN at Montréal,” sophomore Michael Beeli said.
In addition, tomorrow and Sunday, approximately 70 MUN students will attend the BruinMUN XXII at the University of California, Los Angeles.
“I am very excited to gain valuable experience from this conference and improve my debate skills,” MUN freshman Liam Cook said.
MUN participated in its last conference on Oct. 18 and 19 at Edison High School. At the Edison conference, eight Mira Costa MUN students earned a Gavel, the award given to the delegate with the highest score in its committee; 21 students received an Outstanding and 42 received Commendations, given to the delegate with the third highest score.
“I am proud of how Costa did at Edison, and I am happy I could contribute to our overall score at the conference,” said MUN senior Remi Dayton, who received an Outstanding.
