Mira Costa’s comedic improvisational team, Comedy Sportz, will hold its annual Teacher vs. Student Match on Nov. 20 in the auditorium.
The 5 teachers participating in the match will include, Jessica Bledsoe, Timothy Hirsh, Valerie Park, Timothy Piper, and Alan Zeoli. According to Comedy Sportz co-president Charlie Durham, the teachers were chosen due to their positive reputations and humor.
“I am so excited for the match, but I am scared because it’s very difficult to be funny on demand like that,” Zeoli said, “I have a feeling the students will win because they have more experience and are much better at it than we are.”
Comedy Sportz presidents, Durham and Sarah Colon, held tryouts Sept. 23 and elected 27 students to be on the team. According to Durham, the students were chosen based off of their performance during try-out skits.
“I’m so happy that I made Comedy Sportz,” Freshman Comedy Sportz member Jack Drinker said. “I feel so connected to the team and practices are a ton of fun.”
According to the captains, the new drama room is significantly better than the one used in previous years because it has allowed them to finally have their own space. However, the bi-weekly practices are held at different member’s houses, not in the room. They practice by performing skits and playing games reminiscent or even identical to those played during matches.
“We are really working on not just honing everyone’s skills but also getting to that point where everyone is super comfortable not only with playing but with each other,” Colon said, “I really want there to be a supportive environment for the team this year. ”
A ticket for the Teacher vs. Student match is $5. All of the proceeds will go to Comedy Sportz to support the team’s future matches.
“I am so impressed with the team this year,” Durham said, “I know in the past that we have noticed that it usually takes a while for people to get the engines running, but this year we have really hit the ground running.”
