The Associated Student Body will be hosting the first of two blood drives sponsored by the University of California, Los Angeles in November in Fisher Gym.
According to ASB director Lisa Claypoole, ASB is hoping to have at least 125 units of blood donated during the one-day blood drive. For every pint of blood donated, approximately three people in critical condition can be saved.
“The fall blood drive always does great,” Claypoole said. “However, this year we are having a problem finding a date when we don’t have a play-off sport in the gym.”
Any student interested in donating blood must meet the minimum age requirement of 16. Students must also be at least 110 pounds, have not had flu-like symptoms within the past 24 hours or have traveled to a malaria-risk area within the past 12 months.
“If one pint of blood has the opportunity to save at least three lives, that is an incredible impact,” Claypoole said.
At last year’s UCLA blood drive on November 5, around 300 students signed up to donate blood and 147 units of blood were collected.
“I think that last years blood drive was quite successful,” ASB Commissioner of Community Relations Kevin Vartan said. “The support for the blood drive keeps getting stronger every year.”
