Costa Cross Country qualified for CIF Finals at the Preliminary meet on Saturday Nov 15 at Mt. Sac, placing third in their race.
The team competed against 16 other schools including Claremont and Anaheim. Due to their third place ranking, the cross country team will move on to CIF finals.
“We did amazing as a team,” freshman Xavier Court said. “We scored well and were packed together nicely. although some guys were a little disappointed because they were going for better times. All around, we were happy because we get to go to the finals.”
CIF Finals are next Saturday Nov 22 at Mt Sac. If Costa places in the top 7, they move onto the State Finals at Woodpark on Nov 29.
“It’s going to be fast at Finals,” senior Chance Weston said. “Staying together like we did this race should also help us. Our training has been good and I know we can do well.”
Junior Ethan Williams came in first out of Costa with a personal record of 16:06 for three miles placing 14th overall.
“I felt like I did well this race,” Williams said. “I felt happy because I was the first Costa finisher and ran a personal record. I am excited for the Finals and maybe we can make it to state from there.”
The next team members to come in were seniors Bram Osterhout and Brandon Shirazi. Osterhout placed 23rd overall with a time of 16:16. Shirazi came after in 24th with a 16:17.
“We did well today, but there is always room for improvement,” Shirazi said. “We ran well as a team because we stuck together in a pack. Hopefully we can do even better next week at the finals.”
Court placed 25th with a 16:19. Court was followed by sophomore Caleb Llorin in 26th with a 16:20. Senior David Hodges came in 39th with a 16:41 and then Weston with a 17:06.
“Going into the race we knew that we had to get top 5 so that we could move onto finals,” Hodges said. “So we just ran our own race, didn’t stress too much about it, and ended up getting third.”
