The Manhattan Beach Unified School District Board of Trustees voted to ratify the tentative teacher contract agreement on Wednesday at the board meeting.

The Manhattan Beach Unified Teachers’ Association ratified the agreement on Nov. 14. Of the teachers who voted, 92 percent voted to ratify the agreement, which includes salary increases retroactive to July 1 and a new calendar to be implemented for the 2016-17 school year.

“Generally speaking, teachers appreciate the compromises that had to be made to get a deal that works in their best interests,” MBUTA President Shawn Chen said.

The contract includes a 3.5 percent salary increase for employees with fewer than 15 years of service and a 5 percent salary increase for employees with 15 or more years. The new calendar creates a shorter Thanksgiving break, eliminates mid-winter break and starts the summer break earlier.

“It is a great night when we can agree in a relatively quick fashion,” Superintendent Dr. Michael Matthews said.
