On December 3rd, the Mira Costa Math Club attended their second competition of the year at San Marino High School.

The team competed with 9 members in subjects found in Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus, AP Calculus, and AP Statistics. However, because the team didn’t have a minimum of 10 members, they did not qualify for an award.

“Those who attended the math competition were focused, excited to participate, and performed quite well as a result.” one of the two Club Presidents, junior Anna O’Connor, said.

The competition was composed of two parts: individual tests and a team test. Once chooses 3 of 5 tests to take, with 10 minutes each. The team test is a comprehensive test which all team members take, also with a time of 10 minutes. On the team test, the Mira Costa team missed only a single question.

“Because we didn’t have a full team, our final score in relation to other schools wasn’t the highest.” second Club President Cathy Miao said, “Overall, we did well.”

To train for this competition, several “leads” were created to help teach others lessons from different classes. The leads had to take tests to prove their knowledge on the subjects they would be teaching. Additionally, Costa math teacher Daniel Debevec came to teah a lesson concerning linear regression to the Club.

“Because most of our team isn’t taking AP Statistics, we ran into a little trouble during the Statistics section of our tests.”

The Bay Math League is the program which organizes these competitions. They host 4 competitions a year where any high school can compete. The Mira costa Math club intends to participate in the remaining two competitions this year, which will be held at Long Beach Poly High School and South Torrance High School in February and April, respectively.

“I think the team did well,” junior Griffin Heier said, “We should have had more people go to qualify for an award.”
