The Mira Costa girls tennis team lost, 10-8, to Santa Barbara High School on Nov. 10 in the second round of California Interscholastic Federation.
Sophomore Amy Gaal won her first game with a score of 6-0 and lost her next two games, 6-2 and 6-3. The doubles pair of sophomores Isabella and Katarina Draskovic won two games, 6-1 and 6-0, out of the three. In the end, the girls lost by two sets.
“It’s a cliche and you hear it a lot, but it was one of those matches where it was unfortunate that anyone had to lose,” coach Joe Ciasulli said. “Both teams played great, but we just came up a little bit short. We gave maximum effort, and they were just a little bit better that day.”
The turning point for the girls this season was when they faced Santa Barbara the first time on Oct. 24. Because they tied 9-9 in overall sets, the winner was determined by calculating the number of games each team had won in their sets. The Mustangs ended up winning by one game. Because of this win, the team’s rank skyrocketed to number three going into CIF, setting a historical rank for girls tennis.
“I was surprised we could do so well against a top team because this is the best that a girls Costa team has ever done in division one,” senior Taylor Klein said. “It just shows how much we are capable of.”
In the end, the team finished with a final record of 15-5 and finished second in Bay League.
“We are all proud of the way we finished the season,” senior Jordan Cohn said. “It was tough getting eliminated, but we are all proud of the improvements we made during the season.”
