Mira Costa’s improv team, Comedy Sportz, will hold its annual Teacher vrs. Student Match on Nov. 20 in the auditorium at 7 pm.
The 5 teachers participating in the match will include, Jessica Bledsoe, Timothy Hirsh, Valerie Park, Timothy Piper, and Alan Zeoli. These teachers were chosen because they are loved on campus and are funny according to Durham.
“I am so excited for the match, but I am scared because it’s very difficult to be funny on demand like that,” Zeoli said, “I have a feeling the students will win because they have more experience and are much better at it than we are.”
Comedy Sportz seniors and presidents, Sarah Colon and Charlie Durham, held tryouts Sept. 23 and elected 27 students to be on the team. The students were chosen because they had the best performed skits out of everyone trying out.
“I’m so happy that I made Comedy Sportz and I feel so connected to the team and practices are a ton of fun,” Freshman Comedy Sportz member Jack Drinker said.
According to the captains, the new drama room is a huge improvement from previous years because it has allowed them to finally have their own space to work. The team practices twice a week at different member’s houses. They practice by performing funny skits and playing games involving improv.
“We are really working on not just honing everyone’s skills but also getting to that point where everyone is super comfortable not only with playing but with each other,” Colon said, “I really want there to be a supportive environment for the team this year. ”
The cost for watching the Teacher vrs. Student match is $5 to get in. All of the proceeds will go to Comedy Sportz to support the team to make sure that they can have future matches.
“I am so impressed with the team this year,” Durham said, “I know in the past that we have noticed that it usually takes a while for people to get the engines running, but this year we have really hit the ground running.”
