After an intense week filled with creative games, over-the-top costumes and a hilariously choreographed dance routine, Costa students crowned seniors Jack Allen and Sarah Kennedy Homecoming King and Queen at the Homecoming football game against Palos Verdes on Oct. 10.
Allen was nominated by La Vista, where he serves as the organization’s editor-in-chief. He has been a member of the Comedy Sportz team for the past three years and has played on Costa’s water polo team for four years, the past two of which he has spent on varsity. Outside of school, Allen participates in a community service group called Amigos Unidos and has been involved with the Jimmy Miller Foundation and the Wounded Warrior Project.
“Being a part of Homecoming was an incredibly surreal experience,” Allen said. “It all happened so fast, and it wasn’t until afterward that I looked back and I actually realized how incredible all of it was.”
Kennedy was nominated by Costa’s Marching Band, where she plays the flute and serves as Band president. In her free time, she participates in National Charity League, Model United Nations, the Tri-M Honors Society, and is president of National Honor Society. Kennedy also created Costa’s first Quidditch team during her sophomore year.
“I loved being able to represent the band and all of the people that have made my time at Costa so amazing,” Kennedy said. “I was shocked and extremely excited to win.”
Every day of Homecoming week, the six couples dressed up in elaborate garb for a slew of themes and competed against each other in embarrassing competitions. The themed days called upon the court to dress as pairs from children’s tales, different centuries, famous movies, music genres, romance in pop culture, and, finally, as Costa football players and cheerleaders.
“The commissioner of campus morale, Kit Chavers, along with commissioner of special events at Mira Costa, Alegra Stickney, chose the dress up themes for the court,” ASB advisor Lisa Claypoole said. “They chose the ideas, and then the pairs had to go pick an idea within the guidelines of each day’s theme.”
According to Allen, all the members of the court bonded deeply, and forged lasting friendships with each other over the course of the week as they spent hours on end working on dances, filming the infamous Homecoming video, and participating in the daily dress-ups and games during Spirit Week.
“Being in close proximity every day and humiliating ourselves together brought us closer than I had expected,” Allen said. “Looking back, it made the experience more special for all of us, knowing that we can share these memories for the rest of our lives.”
