This morning Brian Kutil, a L.A. county Ocean Lifeguard Specialist, experienced an episode while training in the Mira Costa pool. He passed away shortly after at Little Company of Mary Hospital.
The lifeguards had been using the Mira Costa pool for a 500-meter recertification swim exercise when the 20-year veteran experienced the undetermined health issues.
Mira Costa principal Dr. Ben Dale made an announcement to students and faculty in the early hours of the school day concerning Kutil’s episode. Crisis response was activated and grief counseling is available for all Costa students and staff.
“All of us are shocked by this terrible early morning news,” Fire Chief Daryl L. Osby said in a press release from the L.A. county fire department. “Our hearts go out to his family, friends and his Fire Department family. Please keep everyone in your thoughts as we mourn his tragic loss.”
