The California School Employees Association sunshined, or made public, what topics will be discussed during the collective bargaining negotiations starting Feb. 5 between the CSEA and Manhattan Beach Unified School District at the Jan. 21 MBUSD Board of Trustees meeting.
The CSEA is compiled of union of public school employees statewide. California law mandates that both parties abide by the sunshine clause, requiring that both parties introduce their proposals at a publicized school board meeting before negotiations commence.
CSEA’s sunshined items include having increased professional development, salary and benefits.
“CSEA reserves the right to amend its proposal during the course of the reopened process,” Director of Educational Services Caroline Seaton said.
MBUSD sunshined its items for negotiations during the Dec. 10 board meeting, which include salary and benefits and evaluation for CSEA members.
“The purpose of sunshining is to let the public know about the items,” MBUSD Superintendent Dr. Michael Matthews said.
The sunshining clause gives the public the opportunity to voice concerns regarding the upcoming negotiations, which will begin on Thursday. According to Seaton, negotiations are expected to extend until after March.
“I am hopeful the negotiations sessions will be productive, and I look forward to working with CSEA representatives,” Seaton said.
