After being postponed due to Yik Yak threats, the annual Lip Sync competition hosted by Mira Costa’s Dance Team was on January 7 at 7pm in the auditorium.
Lip Sync is an event where individuals and groups perform choreographed routines on stage for prizes ranging from $150 for first place, $100 for second place, and $50 for third place. Lip sync is one of the annual fundraisers that the dance team puts together in order to help raise money to cover the costs of their competition season.
This year, marching band came in first, advanced drama came in second, and the trio of Rachel Kay, Julia Sheth, and Kalena Tamura came in third.
“I was extremely surprised, especially because most of us are not dancers,” senior and marching band member Lexie Yee said. “But I’m so grateful all the hours of rehearsal paid off.”
This year Lip Sync was originally planned for November 18, but was later moved to January 7 due to threats posted on the social media site Yik Yak, which shut down school when the event was supposed to take place.
“It was difficult to find a new date that a majority of the acts would still be willing to do and that the auditorium would be open for,” junior Samantha Lonergan said. “But it all ended up being worth it.”
The judges, yearbook adviser Valerie Park, vice principal Ian Drummond, vice principal Jon Shaw, academic support counselor Keshia Fields, and Alex Fuesterer, were looking for excellent choreography and organization determine the winning dance. The judges also awarded double points to acts that had someone lip syncing the entire performance.
“One of my favorite parts is intermission because the judges get together and discuss all of the different acts and see if we are evaluating the acts on the same level and the same scale,” Park said.
There were also judges awards handed out for best costume, best choreography, and best organization, which includes a certificate and bag of candy. Black Scholars Union won for best choreography, Drama II won for best organization, and period 5 Associated Student Body won for best costume.
“When we won the award I was extremely shocked,” sophomore and drama II member Sara Gustafson said. “We took part in the event mainly because we just wanted to participate and I hadn’t really thought about us winning anything.”
Along with student choreographed dances, there were also two dances performed by faculty. The first one, “Dad’s Life, dedicated to father’s around the world” was performed by male teachers and their children and female teachers participated in “The Fantastic Funky Fly Faculty gets fly on the dance floor”.
“I always enjoy the teachers,” Park said. “They are always really creative and fun and I like to see that staff members aren’t afraid to get up in front of students and be really goofy.”
The dance team also performed during Lip Sync, but not for prizes. The team performed their dances entitled, “Hip Hop Mix” and “Rappers Delight”.
“Watching the show and seeing it all come together is the best part because it is always exciting when you have the audience participating as well,” Dance Team Coach Victoria Brown said.
