With seniors awaiting college admission decisions, multiple students and parents raised concerns about Costa’s grade weighting policy on Feb. 4 at the Manhattan Beach Unified School District Board of Trustees meeting.
Chief executive officer of Real College Knowledge and Costa parent Kristen Borostyan stated that in her experience, many colleges are not recalculating unweighted GPAs and ask high schools for already-calculated weighted GPAs.
“Costa cannot dictate the fate of students applying to college when they offer AP classes since students are college bound,” CEO and Creator of Real College Knowledge Kristen Borostyan said. “For Costa to dismiss the 5.0 scale is appalling.”

“It makes me upset that universities will not weight grades,” MBUSD Superintendent Dr. Michael Matthews said. “It should be their job to do that.”
According to Matthews the board will soon be forming a committee of parents, students, teachers and counselors to discuss how to approach this subject. This committee will help create a decision that will be enforced in the 2015-16 school year.
“Changing things in the middle of the year, at the last minute, is no good way to do things,” Matthews said. “I regrettably think the right course of action is to make a plan soon and make a decision for next year.”
