Mira Costa is currently working with College Board to determine whether or not it is eligible to offer a new Advanced Placement Seminar in Broadcast starting next year.
Broadcast teacher Michael Hernandez would teach the class, which would be a more advanced class for students who have completed Broadcast 1. The class would teach students to investigate real-world topics, collect and analyze information, and develop arguments based on facts.
“The focus of the class is to use interdisciplinary techniques to explore topics of student’s choice, then communicate and report back their findings using a variety of means,” Hernandez said.
Students in Broadcast will have the choice to take the course for AP credit or not. If they choose to take it for credit, they will have extra course work and take some form of an AP test.
“We’re still looking into the possibility of offering this class next year,” Hernandez said. “The administration is checking with the College Board to see if we can offer it.”
Although the course would be an AP class, it would not be very different from the current Broadcast class, according to Hernandez.
“Broadcast students have been doing college-level work all along, so offering the class as an AP allows our students to get the recognition they deserve on their transcripts,” Hernandez said.
