Mira Costa’s Associated Student Body will host its annual Winter Formal dance with the theme “Winter Ball” at Los Verdes Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.
In past years, ASB has hosted the formal on a yacht but decided to change the venue this year after students complained about issues such as sea sickness and being stuck on the boat throughout the entire night.
“The thing that stood out about the venue was that it looks out over a golf course and is really pretty,” Commissioner of Entertainment sophomore Morgan Kelley said. “The room that students will be dancing in is very spread out and gives everyone a good amount of room, which makes it the perfect location for Formal.”
According to Commissioner of Entertainment senior Kristin Reed, ASB wanted to keep the new venue local and more accessible than the yacht.
“I’m looking forward to the beautiful view from the country club,” junior Jenessa Gonzalez said. “I think it’s great that ASB has decided to change the setting of Winter Formal.”
According to Commissioner of Entertainment junior Nickole Garlitos, the venue will be decorated, by a company hired by ASB, to correspond with the “Winter Ball” theme of the event. ASB also plans to decorate the hall with snowflakes.
“In the past, the themes have been really cheesy, like ‘Drop it like it’s Yacht,’” said Garlitos. “We wanted something classy, like something people see in the movies.”
According to ASB director Lisa Claypoole, few activities will be included at the dance because fewer people attend Winter Formal than Prom, ASB plans for a smaller budget on Winter Formal.
“I really think that we have a nice event to offer to students,” Claypoole said. “It will be a great night, and it will be fun and, hopefully, people will be talking about it the Monday morning after.”
