Winter festivities at Costa didn’t stop after winter break. On Feb. 28, Costa’s Associated Student Body held their annual winter formal at Palos Verdes Golf Club in the banquet room.
This year’s theme was “Winter Ball.” In the past three years, ASB held winter formal on a yacht, but changed it to a local venue to attract more students.
“Previous years on the yacht have been great but we are hoping to gain more success from a broader group of people as we change locations,” ASB co-commisioner Kristen Reed said. “Last year on the yacht, people got sick and too cold.”
Reed and co-commisioners Morgan Kelley and Nickole Garlitos were responsible for selecting the venue, publicizing the event, and selling tickets. Advisor Lisa Claypoole helped the students plan, but gave the students the freedom to make the decisions.
“I’m a big fan of the yacht and I would go year after year, but the kids wanted to see if a new location would bring more success,” Claypoole said.
ASB revealed the theme to the students about six weeks before ticket sales. They also decided to use social media to publicize the event. By using the hashtag “#winterball2k15” on social media, ASB had the opportunity to see through Instagram and Twitter posts how people were being asked. If a student asked in an interesting way, they received free tickets to the event.
“I think when students post pictures with the hashtag, more people know about formal and buy tickets,” ASB member Jacob Silvera said. “I love to see all the great ways people get asked.”
