Video – Mira Costa girls volleyball falls to Mater Dei, ending CIF run

After the Mira Costa Mustangs took down Chaparral at home, the girls volleyball team traveled to Mater Dei to take on the Monarchs in the California Interscholastic Federation quarterfinals. The Mustangs lost the match in five sets, 13-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22, 12-15, and were eliminated from the CIF playoffs.

The Monarchs dominated the Mustangs in the first set, despite Costa sophomore Hannah Scott and senior Katie Rethmeyer combining for six kills. Costa retaliated in the second, with Scott delivering three more kills and senior Skylar Caputo contributing three as well. The third came down to the wire, but Mater Dei hitters Brittany Welsh and Alyse Ford couldn’t be stopped. The Mustangs rallied in a must-win fourth set, as senior defensive specialist Lindsey Chalmers was subbed in to finish off the game.

Costa started strong in the fifth and final set, with Rethmeyer recording two kills immediately. But Mater Dei’s Ford returned fire with five kills in the last set, leading Mater Dei to a berth in the semifinals. Caputo finished with ten kills and five digs and Rethmeyer finished with ten kills and four blocks, as the two seniors led Costa offensively. Scott recorded nine kills and three digs as well.

The Mustangs impressive season ended in the quarterfinals of CIF playoffs for the second consecutive year.
