The Mustangs traveled to Santa Monica High School on Thursday, September 23, and suffered their first loss of the season. Thursday’s loss was the girls’ tennis team’s first close match of the season shaking their record (5-1).
The Mustangs finished the match tied 9-9, leaving their undefeated season to be determined by tie-breaking games. The Mustangs lost the tiebreaker because they had fewer game wins during their matches against Santa Monica.
Senior Taylor Mahr played well, winning two of her three matches on Thursday. The Mustangs were without top singles player, sophomore Maegan Manasse, due to an illness. Manasse has not lost a single match all season and has been a large part of the team’s success.
Senior Laura Derian and sophomore Hanna McGuire won all three of their matches continuing their personal hot streak. Derian and McGuire have been the Mustangs top doubles tandem this season, winning seventeen of their eighteen matches.
Junior Erin Murphy and sophomore Ava Klein won two of their three matches on the day with a score of 6-2 and 7-5. The junior-sophomore pairing have played well as of late and seem to be on the rise for the Mustangs.
The girls will look to bounce back from their first loss of the season on Tuesday, September 28, when the Mustangs take on Crossroads at 3:00pm at home. With four days off before their next match, the girls will be able to rest and recover before their next stretch of matches.
