Students and teachers took different roles outside the classroom on Thursday March 5th when the dance team held its annual show “Dancing with the Teachers” at 7 in the auditorium.
Dance team members were paired with two teachers and each group planned their own performance based off what song each teacher pair chose. Keshia Field and Karl Kurtz danced a tap number from the 2000s and took 1st place, winning the mirror ball trophy.
“Everyone was very excited and confident on stage so our numbers ran just as planned,” dance team member Maddy Wagner said. “I think overall the show was a hit. It was fun seeing teachers outside of the classroom having fun.”
Numbers from different eras including the 1920’s, 30’s, 40’s, 70’s, 90’s and 2000s were performed.
“This was definitely the highlight of my school year so far,” Kurtz said. “I think what set our dance apart from the other numbers was the crowd pleasing song with a nice beat.
Andrea Collicutt and Jamison Hughes took 2nd place with their 2000s dance to LMFAOs “Party Rock Anthem”. Stefani Owen and Daniel Debevec won 3rd place with their 1960 “Austin Powers” theme song dance.
“The show was a great experience and all the extra practices payed off,” Collicutt said. “I think what set the first place dance apart from ours was their intricate dance moves and how they executed them.”
Principal Ben Dale, English teacher Quincy Howerton, Dance teacher Yvonne Johnson and Yearbook teacher Valerie Park judged the competition. The judges looked for technique, enthusiasm and how well they knew their dance.
“We judged on a scale from 5-10,” Park said. “The best part about Mr. Kurz’s and Ms. Fields’ performance was the high energy, they were having fun and enjoying themselves. They knew their choreography and the crowd loved it, it had lots of tricks and hard moves.”
