On Saturday, March 21, students, staff and parents will participate in Pride Day, an annual Mira Costa event organized by the Associated Student Body.

Pride Day gives community members the opportunity to beautify the Costa campus. Attendees participate in activities such as gardening and picking up trash around the campus.

“I think students should get involved in Pride Day because it is a great way to earn community service hours and give back to our school,” commissioner of campus welfare senior Ellen Speicher said.

In order to participate, registration forms available in the ASB room, must be completed. There are two 4 hour shifts that people have the option to sign up for which will be from 9am-1pm and 11am-3pm.

“The hardest part with having so many kids is keeping them working the whole time,” ASB director Lisa Claypoole said.

ASB requires that each active club at Costa send at least three active members to participate in Pride Day. According to Claypoole, failure to do so may result in a punishment such as losing a homecoming nomination for the upcoming school year.

“We want to push people to come to Pride Day mainly because we need the workers,” Claypoole said.

According to science teacher Danny Sponaugle, certain science teachers offer their students extra credit for taking part in the event. Students enrolled in health are also encouraged to attend by the incentive of receiving community service hours for the class.

“I think that by offering the extra credit it is incentive to get students to help their campus,” Sponaugle said.

ASB is encouraging students to come out this year to help because the following week Costa will be having its WASC visit and ASB hopes to make the campus look more presentable for the visit.

“If people want to help make Costa a better place, then they should come take part in Pride Day,” commissioner of campus welfare junior Diego Madrigal said.
