MBX holds summer school lottery

Costa students participated in a lottery on March 11 in the Costa auditorium, allowing randomly-selected students to enroll in four summer school courses that have high demand.

The lottery determined which students could enroll in Health, Modern World History, United States History and American Government. Summer school president Gary Wayland and staff member Kathy Duffy manually drew names for the lottery. Out of the 1,700 students who took part in the lottery, only 50 percent got into its desired classes.

“We believe the lottery reduced stress for all of our stakeholders, parents, students and the Costa community,” Wayland said.

Last year, the MBX summer school enrollment website was not equipped for large enrollment into highly demanded classes, causing it to crash multiple times.

“The lottery was not reliant upon whether someone could log into the system when it was not crashing and did not require anybody to sit by a device all day,” Vice Principal Ian Drummond said.

Wayland and Duffy placed students who were not picked onto a waiting list. These students will be notified whether they received entrance into the classes this Monday as openings occur.

“For students who fall low on the lottery, my suggestion is to be patient and to really give us a chance to get them into our program,” Drummond said.
