The Mira Costa High School track and field team travelled to Peninsula High School on Wednesday where both the girls and the boys finished with a victory over the Panthers. The girls varsity team came out on top with the final score tallied at 81 to 55 and the boys also defeated the Panthers 77 to 59.
The Mustangs had some standout athletes placed in the top three at the meet including sophomore Shante Robinson who ran 16 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles to finish on top with senior Sasha Congdon-Ng placing third with a 19 second run. Robinson also placed first in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 46.9 seconds while Congdon-Ng coming in at 53.2 for third place.
“Our team really came together to pull through with the win even in the really close events which made me really proud to watch” Congdon-Ng said. “Personally I want to continue improving my three step to take the first place in the future to help my team gain points.”
Another Costa athlete, senior Jordyn Dorsey, took first in the 100 meter sprints with a time of 12.4 seconds. She fell short by one second in the 200 meter sprint to finish in second place with 26.9 seconds. In the distance events, senior Natasha Brunstein ran the 3200 with an 11 minute 10 second time to easily take first.
“It was a great day for our entire team,” Dorsey said. “I was really proud of my personal performance and was really happy with how everyone else treated their events to get the win.”
The girls team dominated in the triple jump, sealing the top places with senior Kandace King coming in first with 32-4. Junior Myan Elrington took second with 31-10 and junior Alexa Faubert finished in third with 31-9.
“I am so happy with how our entire team performed to make the meet so successful,” King said. “I didn’t expect to do as well as I did so I was really happy we all did our best to get the results we had trained for to win like we did.”
The boys varsity also had a successful meet with junior Ty Garrett leading the 1600 meter run, finishing first at 4:38. With his team members close behind junior Ethan Williams took second with a time of 4:39, senior Brandon Shirazi third at 4:40 and sophomore Caleb Llorin came in fourth with 4:41.
”Having lost to Peninsula last year we really wanted to redeem ourselves so I’m very happy we did so well in our respective events,” Shirazi said. “We brought our best performance to come out with the points to ensure this victory and now we just have to keep on improving at each race and take it meet by meet.”
Other events were led by the Mustangs with Garrett finishing at a time of 2:02 in the 800 meter to take first again. For the 300 meter low hurdles, sophomore James Ryczanowski took first place with 43.2 and he also finished second in the 110 meter hurdles with a 17.0 time. “It’s a great feeling to come out on top especially when everyone works their hardest to do their best,” Johnson said.” “We need to focus on improving our individual skills to gain the spots we need to continue winning as a whole.”
