Mira Costa Principal Dr. Ben Dale announced on March 11 the five nominees for 2015 Student of the Year: seniors Ryan Cosner, Reilly Edmonds, Lauren Irwin, Mai Nojima and Derek Zeoli.
Teachers chose the nominees from the top 10 percent of the senior class, based on unweighted grade point averages.
According to Dale, students are considered based on academics, school involvement and community service.
“I am truly honored to be considered for this recognition among such an amazing senior class,” Edmonds said. “It shows that I am being recognized for the hard work I have put in, which I am very grateful for.”
Each nominee filled out a questionnaire to provide more information about his/her school and community activities, GPA, their overall impact at Costa and what the students have taken away from Costa.
“I like this system because teachers actually get to pick who they think is the best based on the student overall, and that would mean a lot to me if I were in their position,” Dale said.
Each department votes for one nominee for Student of the Year. The winner will be revealed on May 21 at the annual All-Awards Assembly.
“I consider myself to be just another student amongst my peers, so I will be incredibly honored if I am selected,” Cosner said.
