Phil Miller seems to be the last man on Earth, but quickly finds out that he is not alone.
“The Last Man On Earth,” a TV comedy that has an overall depressing tone of one man being the last person alive, contains skillful actors and a talented writing staff, and proves to be a hilarious comedy that shies away from any overly dramatic themes.
Phil Miller (Will Forte) and his wife, Carol Pilbasian (Kristen Schaal), live in the desolate town of Tucson arizona where they must start to rebuild the human race themselves. Even though they hold the important task of rebuilding humanity they do not seem to want to live or even work together.
Actors Will Forte and Kristen Schaal work perfectly together in this TV comedy where they play characters who are both polar opposites. They both portray characters who both want to live in this unpopulated world completely differently, and the actors pull off this feud with absolute brilliance.
The characters Phil and Carol have been forced into living together even though they could not be any more different. For example, when they first meet, Phil demonstrates his lack of care for the past world by blatantly running through stop signs, which freaks Carol out to no end. They are forced to become friendly with each other or else the human race is doomed.
Even though they are polar opposites, Phil is able to overcome their differences and tries to do a few nice things for Carol. He notices that while Carol is trying to start a farm she does not have any running water for it, and he decides to spend the day bringing running water to their houses.
Carol is also starting to be able to make exceptions for Phil’s lack of care for the law. She mainly stops her overbearing attachment of what the world used to be and lets Phil drive as carelessly as he wants. Also, for her wedding ring they go together and steal thousands of dollars of perfect diamonds.
With the hilarious writer that is Will Forte, the show brings a new style of comedy that is unlike most current shows. He uses the characters differences brilliantly to further bring them apart, while still showing that they need to be together to survive.
The mix of an interesting setting, entertaining characters, and an engaging story makes “The Last Man On Earth” a must watch show that greatly differs from most other shows on TV today.
It is rated TV-MA and can be viewed on Fox on Sundays at 9 p.m.
