This Spring season the Mira Costa baseball team stands strong holding a record of 6-3. This Season the team is looking to qualify for the California interscholastic games unlike last season.
Although the team is only in its very early stages in the season the boys are still practicing extremely hard in order to better last years record of 10-21-0. The boys Strongpoint has been the team’s pitching which is lead by Junior Trevor Franklin as well as Seniors Miles Kluth, and Michael Rumpp.
“So far this season the pitching has been fantastic,” Coach Cassidy Olsen said. “The hitting has been much improved and the defense has been disappointing.”
In practice the boys have mainly been working on defense due to defensive problems in games during the season. If the boys are able to tighten up their defense they will allow less runs from opposing teams and therefore be more successful during games.
” We are 6-3 despite very poor defense,” Olsen said. “But we are working extra hard on it in practice and we will get better.”
The team consists of seniors and juniors who all have a lot of playing experience and time playing with each other on the field however thiis year all the boys are trying progress their baseball skills in order to help the team qualify for the CIF tournament this year.
“I really think the thing that is special about this year is just how close everyone on the team is,” junior pitcher Trevor Franklin said. “Also, our team this year has more experience at the varsity level than last year because our team consists of only juniors and seniors.”
Although the team consists of many seniors and a tight knit group of juniors the team still needs to get more used to playing as a unit on top of working on their skills.
“We look good so far this season, but we are a relatively young team,” Olsen said. “For example our pitching has been outstanding and we have been putting up runs against weaker pitchers.”
The boys strong pitching gives them an advantage however when the ball is hit by the opponent the boys have had reoccurring problems either catching the ball of tagging the opposing player out at base. If all of the boys practice pays of and this problem is fixed many of the Mustangs agree that by the end of the year they should be in great shape to win more games.
“We have been pretty strong this year in pitching and its our obligation to help our pitchers out the way they’re helping us out by throwing strikes and competing the way they do,” catcher Brett Davis said. “Our main focus is tuning up our defensive game.”
Because the teams strong work ethic and their success thus far in the season both players and Olsen believe this years team can go far as long as they continue to work hard.
“If we keep playing at the rate we are playing at this years team has potential to due great,” Kluth said. “As long as we really focus on the areas of the game we have had problems with in the past such as defense we will have a great season.
