The hit cartoon Spongebob Squarepants is brought to life in the semi-animated new film, “Spongebob Squarepants: Sponge Out of Water”.
About as impressive as it gets, the animation throughout this film is realistic and the incorporation of real life with the animation makes for a more modern film that combines the two dimensions. The film is a family oriented comedy and is directed primarily at young children but can still be enjoyed by anyone.
“SpongeBob Squarepants” is a Nickelodeon cartoon television program that has been on air since 1999 and is still popular today. This is the second of two movies that the writers have created to go along with the show.
Spongebob Squarepants is a yellow sea sponge that lives in a town called Bikini Bottom with his friends and neighbors Patrick Star, Sandy Cheeks, Mr. Krabs, Squidward Tentacles, his pet snail Gary, and arch nemesis Plankton. Spongebob works at the Krusty Krab where the secret formula to make “Krabby Patties” recently disappeared and it is Spongebob’s duty to get it back.
The new film makes allusions to old episodes of the show, bringing back old jokes and making it more enjoyable for viewers who have previously seen the show. The references to other episodes make the film unique by having an old storyline to pull from. Even though there are references to old episodes, the film still maintains its originality.
Having been a show before the movie, the writers of “Spongebob Squarepants” have a broad variety of plot ideas and jokes to pull from, which tie the new film back into the show. The way the writers attach the characters to their normal roles in the show and apply them to the new jokes and plot creates entertaining connections and brings back memories of the old Spongebob Squarepants.
The incredible animation for this film is done by Paramount Animation. When the cartoon characters come out into the real world, Spongebob and his friends still look like cartoons but contain realistic features as well. This contrast makes the film look more realistic and gives it a positive fantasy aspect at the same time.
For a children’s cartoon, the plot fits perfectly, incorporating PG violence and jokes that suit a child’s understanding. The plot is easy to follow containing a narrator telling the story and Spongebob getting a hold of the storybook to change the story.
The new film, “The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water,” is an exceedingly entertaining film targeted primarily at children, which incorporates a mixture of animation and real life acting, and proves why “Spongebob Squarepants” has been such a successful television show for over 15 years.
“The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” is rated PG and is playing in theaters nationwide.
