Mira Costa faced off against Peninsula at Peninsula High School on Wednesday. Although the Mustangs kept the game close, they were unable to score enough runs to secure the win and ended up losing, 2-1.
Little action occurred during the first two innings. Both teams had strong pitching and defense that did not allow for many scoring opportunities.
“Our minds weren’t really in the game today,” junior catcher Brett Davis said. “We weren’t playing our best.”
In the third inning, junior center fielder Reese Alexiades was able to make it home after a line drive by junior second baseman Will Proctor. However, in the bottom of the inning, Peninsula scored, tying up the game 1-1. This kicked off a defensive battle as both teams struggled to take the lead.
“A lot of things didn’t go our way today,” senior first baseman Dylan Tyrer said. “We struggled to get any flow going, and this ultimately cost us the game.”
In the bottom of the seventh, Peninsula was able to score one more run after an error by the Mustangs at second base. This was ultimately the game-winning run for the Panthers.
“We played poorly today and didn’t get the job done as a team,” senior pitcher Miles Kluth said. “We needed to play with more urgency and energy. But I believe that the entire team is a piece of the puzzle, and we can improve on all aspects of our playing. We really need to execute the small things.”
Costa holds an overall record of 14-7 and a Bay League record of 1-2. The boys will play Peninsula (10-10) today at 3:15 p.m. at home.
“Peninsula played very well against us,” junior pitcher Trevor Franklin said. “We came out weak, which is not like us, but we will get things going today at home against Peninsula for the second game of the series.”
