The Costa administration has implemented a new waiver system for the 2015-16 school year to help repair the defects from previous years.
The new system gives waiver and students who meet class prerequisites the same chance of being accepted into a class and allows students to know if they will be waived into a class within the first two weeks of online registration.
“This year is really a huge change for us,” Vice Principal Ian Drummond said. “We have tried before to change the way we admit students into classes before, but we are hoping this year will be the best yet.”
According to Principal Dr. Ben Dale, students and faculty found fault in the 2014-15 program and made themselves heard via personal complaints. These complaints exposed that the original waivers took up important school days at beginning of the year due to lack of pre-planning, in which students were waiting to learn if they had gotten into a class.
“I am glad the school is able to provide this for students who are looking to take classes that challenge themselves,” Dale said.
Waiver Form One was due on March 23 and is for students who did not meet the grade requirements to get into a class during their first semester of the school year. Waiver Form Two will be available in late May for students whose second semester grades are predicted to not meet the requirement for the class they hope to get into.
“I understand that students are motivated to take classes that challenge themselves at this school,” Drummond said. “The waivers allow for that, while balancing all students who wish to take part in them.”
