For the past two months, the Manhattan Beach Unified School District Board of Trustees has been working to compose and eventually approve a Facilities Master Plan that will serve as a guideline for further remodeling of the district’s facilities.
The master plan will consist of both basic repairs to buildings including new lighting, windows and the addition of completely new buildings to Manhattan Beach Preschool, all five elementary schools, Manhattan Beach Middle School, Polliwog Park and Costa.
“As we are concluding the construction work that we planned through Measure BB, it is a good time for the district to take a look at all of its facilities at all the school sites,” Assistant Superintendent Dr. Dawnalyn Murakwa-Leopard said.
A group of architects from the DLR group, an architectural firm, has been hired to outline a master plan.
“We choose DLR because we believe it will provide the best service and vision for our district,” Superintendent Dr. Michael Matthews said.
The board will hold a final meeting on June 3 where it will compile feedback into the final master plan. The construction for all facilities may begin in 2018 and will be ongoing for at least another 20 years.
“There’s so much that has gone into this plan,” board member Karen Komatinsky said. “It is truly a community effort.”
