District plans new weighted grade policy

The Manhattan Beach Unified School District Board of Trustees will vote at the May 20 board meeting regarding a policy for weighting grades at Costa.

This issue was brought to the district’s attention at the board meeting on Feb. 4 by a group of parents and teachers. According to Costa parent Kristin Borostyana, many colleges are not recalculating students’ grade point averages as it is too time consuming.

“Costa can no longer ignore what is happening, and if they want to play in the big leagues with other progressive districts, it better change its policies,” Borostyan said.

To discuss this issue, the board formed a subcommittee consisting of Costa college and career counselors, board members, teachers, guidance counselors, parents, Principal Dr. Ben Dale, Vice Principal Ian Drummond and outside college counselors from the private company Blue Train.

“The committee did a fantastic job,” Superintendent Dr. Michael Matthews said. “It held open discussions, and through this they were able to obtain a great understanding of the issue.”

The decision made on May 20 will be implemented into the fall for the 2015-16 school year.

“Unfortunately, there is no way we are going to be able to implement this into this years’ seniors,” MBUSD board member Karen Komatinsky said.
