The Mira Costa High School track and field team traveled to rival Redondo Union High School on Thursday and suffered its first loss of the season. The Mustangs fell short with the boys varsity final score of 55-81 and the girls varsity score 42-94.
Costa has a Bay League record of 4-1 and an overall record of 10-1 for both boys and girls varsity. Some athletes placed first over the Seahawks in multiple events including sophomore Shante Robinson and junior Omar Morrison.
“It was really tough losing since we are now not able to win the league title but I am still confident that our team has the talent to go far,” Robinson said. “I felt we gave a lot of energy into each race but Redondo just had the better team this year.”
Robinson, who placed first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.1, also finished on top with a time of 43’14 for the 300 meter hurdles. For boys varsity, Morrison finished first with a time of 42’34 in the 300 meter long hurdles.
The Mustangs’ next compete in the Bay League prelims on Tuesday. Today is the meet to determine the location and opponent which they will face next week in order to advance to the finals.
“We gave it our all against Redondo but it was still rough to lose to our rival which took away our chances of the title,” Robinson said. “We need to remain focused in order to take the team ahead of us and focus on each event to move on to the next round.”
