Track team competes in Bay League Prelims

The Mira Costa High School track and field team hosted all of the Bay League teams at home for the individual preliminary round on Tuesday. The top three finishers for each event automatically advance, as well as the athletes with the best times overall. The Mustangs had multiple athletes advance from both the boys and the girls varsity teams.

Costa went into prelims with a Bay League record of 4-1 and an overall record of 10-1 for both boys and girls varsity. Some athletes that placed to compete in the finals include senior Jordyn Dorsey and sophomore Shante Robinson.

“It felt great to represent my school out there in front of all our biggest rivals we’ve faced throughout the season,” Robinson said. “Im excited to continue training to perform my best in the finals to make it to CIF which was my goal at the beginning of the season.”

Robinson placed second in the 100-meter hurdles to automatically advance with a time of 15.1 and she also finished on top, in first place, with a time of 46’85 for the 300 meter hurdles. Dorsey also will compete in the finals after finishing first in the 100 meter dash race with a time of 12’44.

“I was so happy to take away first in such a crucial meet for our team,” Dorsey said. “Costa showed a lot of our strong talent which was the perfect time when we needed it most to advance and now I feel really confident going into Friday’s meet.”

The Mustangs’ compete in the Bay League finals on Friday on their home turf starting at 6pm. Friday is the meet to determine which athletes and schools will qualify to advance in CIF competitions.

“I was very proud of our entire program for placing so well in the prelim round with many our own athletes advancing,” Coach Calderon said. “We have a lot of potential and have performed well this entire season with great stats so I know our team will do their best on Friday when it matters most.”
