In the first round of the California Interscholastic Federation playoffs, the Mustangs overcame its seed and won 14-7 at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club on May 4 against Cypress. The girls’ Audrey Kim and boys’ Henry Yu were top performers, winning both of their games

The team won its fourteen games by a large sum. According to Yu, it’s girls component was dominant down the stretch, not letting Cypress gain any advantage. Also, the top players could be handed out to everyone for putting up a solid effort.

“We did really well as a whole, but the other girls stepped up and did us all a favor by being so dominant and persistent. That’s what we need to win three next few games,” Shirleen Chen said.

According to Shirleen Chen, the individual effort of Kim and Chen propelled the team forward against a poor effort from the Cypress girls. The team plays today against Yorba Linda at Yorba Linda, who has an impressive record of 8-0.

“We played really well, and this gives us a lot of momentum, which we’ll need next week because this team is undefeated and we’re looking to make that zero a one,” Yoshi Cohn said.
