Mira Costa sophomore Connor Wohl and Da Vinci High School junior Aidan Nesicolaci recently transformed Costa’s parking lot into the showing site of classic and exoctic automobiles, calling car lovers from all over the area.
The Mira Costa Car Club hosted their second annual car show on Apr. 25 in the Costa student parking lot. Cars owners traveled from all over the Los Angeles area to display their automobiles.
“For a second year show we are unbelievably successful,” Wohl said. “We have nearly doubled in the amount of cars and attendees this past year, and there has been a major increase in the quality of cars.”
The show spanned from 11-2 p.m. and there was over 400 people and 90 cars displayed. Two food trucks catered for the show. The event was made possible with a $10 donation from each attendee.
“This whole event is made possible by the generous donations given by each attendee and any remaining money is set aside for next year,” Wohl said. “This is a 100% non-profit event and we do it for our shared passion of automobiles.”
All cars arrived at the Costa student lot by 10:15 a.m. to be assigned parking. When the majority of attendees had arrived, the cars did a quick drive-by and then parked so viewers could stop by and take a look.
“Seeing all of the amazing cars and the huge turnout of viewers was really a dream come true,” club member Chase Stroman said. “It basically was a big get together for people who shared a common interest.”
The car show gave out two awards: the ‘Best in show’ and the ‘People’s Choice’. The members of the Car Club voted on their favorite cars at the end of the event and granted the winners with a plaque.
“The coolest car I saw would have to be the bright red Lamborghini,” attendee Bryce Lyter said. “There were several amazing cars such as the Porsche 918, the BMW I82 and several classic cars from the 50’s.”
Next year, the Car Club plans to host the event in honor of a charity of the club’s choice. They will also have a donation box for attendees to donate to the charity.
“Dedicating the car show to a charity would greatly enhance the show,” club member Brendan Brady said. “It would still offer the same emphasis on love for cars but also an emphasis on helping others.”
Nesicolaci and Wohl each created the Car Club at their respective schools after collaborating on the idea of hosting the car show. Nesicolaci and Wohl work together along with their clubs to plan and coordinate the event.
“Despite us being at different schools, we work together as co-captains to get this event to happen,” Wohl said. “Planning something like this requires an abundance of coordination and having two clubs really makes it easier.”
The Car Club advertised through their website, handing out flyers and attending other car shows. Interested car owners could then register their vehicle for the event on the Car Club website.
“Proper and effective advertising is an essential piece of keeping this show running smoothly,” said Nesicolaci. “We must have a large attendance and interesting cars for people to keep coming back.”
Nesicolaci and Wohl plan to host the event in downtown Manhattan Beach next year in order to get more attendees. They aspire to display over 100 cars in the next car show.
“Hopefully we can continue the progression of the car club and make it an extremely popular event,” Wohl said.“South bay residents have so many amazing cars and our car show gives them a perfect opportunity to show off and meet other car fanatics.”
