Two Costa sophomores are on key with their new band, Scary Kids.

Asha Berkes and Jake Nick started the acoustic alternative band, Scary Kids, in March. Their passion for producing the same genre of music, acoustic alternative, brought them together. Their first single, “I Wanna Marry a Girl in Rollerskates,” is available exclusively on Soundcloud.

“My favorite part about Scary Kids is the fact that it is only my best friend and me,” Nick said. “There is never any judgment about writing or how we want to sound; it is always a fully supportive collaboration.”

Berkes and Nick began collaborating this year, starting their band in March. Before they formed Scary Kids, they would send each other songs they wrote independently and suggested new ideas to make their songs come together.

“My favorite part is writing the songs,” Berkes said. “Jake and I both love writing, so it is great we get to write our own ideas and then combine them by making the individual sounds come together.”

Scary Kids has only recorded one song, “I Wanna Marry a Girl in Rollerskates,” but the duo has written enough songs to fill an Extended Play, or EP, and plans to post it upon finalizing the editing.

“My favorite song that is going to go into the EP so far is called ‘Retched,’” Berkes said. “I absolutely love the lyrics and how the song flows really effortlessly. It’s also extremely catchy and fun to sing.”

According to Berkes, somehow the name “Scary Kids” came up and instantly stuck, fitting both their personalities and the kind of music they want to make.
“We both immediately really liked the name,” Berkes said. “It fits us perfectly.”

According to Scary Kids, the well-known alternative artist, Lana Del Rey, is a huge inspiration to the band. The songs “Angels Forever” and “Video Games” are Berkes’ two biggest inspirations because Del Rey is able to describe simple situations and make them beautiful.

“The general vibe of each song works really well with what she is trying to portray, and her songs have always been extremely important to me,” Berkes said.

The “ScaryKidsBand” Soundcloud is the only current source to find the band’s music. Once they finish the EP, Berkes and Nick plan to make songs available for purchase on iTunes, start performing and making improvements to their sound quality.

“Once we put our EP on iTunes, we will use the money to help pay for production and better recording,” Nick said.
